Dr. Belinda De Simone is a consultant emergency and colorectal surgeon at AUSL Romagna,
Ospedale di Rimini, Italy. She completed her medical training in Italy and pursued advanced
specialization in France, earning diplomas in robotic, laparoscopic, and oncologic digestive surgery,
as well as in the management of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Her clinical expertise spans acute care
surgery, colorectal emergencies, and the operative management of bariatric complications.
She is principal investigator of several international research initiatives, including the ARIES
(Artificial Intelligence in Emergency Surgery), OBA (Operative Bariatric Acute Abdomen), the
ChoCO study (focused on necrotic cholecystitis in COVID-19 patients), and the ongoing COOLDER
project addressing emergency surgery in older and frail patients.
Dr. De Simone is actively involved in the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), where she
leads consensus processes and contributes to guideline development. Author of over 100 peerreviewed
publications, she is frequently invited to speak or moderate at international congresses.
Her academic interests include AI-assisted decision-making, surgical ethics, and end-of-life care in
emergency settings.
