Dr. Michel B. Aboutanos

Dr. Michel B. Aboutanos, MD, MPH, FACS. NOTW is the Fletcher Emory Ammons Distinguished Professor in Surgery, and Chair of the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services in the Department of Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, USA. He is the  Medical Director of VCU Level 1 Trauma Center and Trauma Systems Network.  He also serves as the Director of VCU’s Injury & Violence Prevention Programs (IVPP). He  currently serves as the Chair of Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons – Committee on Trauma. Dr. Aboutanos completed his general surgery training at MCV/VCU, and his trauma & critical care training at the University of Maryland’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland USA. He additionally completed a residency in Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University where he obtained his Masters in Public Health with emphasis on Injury and Violence control and International  Trauma Systems Development. He previously served as the Chair of Virginia Trauma Administrative and Governance Committee  and Systems Committee and led the development of State of Virginia  Trauma Systems Plan. He is a surgeon scientist serving as principal investigator for more than 120 grants with over 160 peer review publications and 30 book chapters with emphasis on Injury Control and Trauma Systems development.  Dr. Aboutanos is a member of multiple regional, national and international  organizations and societies. He previously served as president and is currently on the Executive Board of the Panamerican Trauma Society.
