Dr. Edgar B. Rodas was born and raised in Cuenca, Ecuador. He graduated from Medical School in the University of Cuenca, in Ecuador closely mentored by his father, Edgar Rodas Sr, a Master Surgeon. He then moved to the United States to pursue training in surgery. He began as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Yale Endo-Laparoscopic Center conducting research in laparoscopy and telemedicine, followed by basic science research in cell physiology and molecular biology. He spent a year as an intern in general surgery in Yale-New Haven Hospital. He then completed his surgical residency in General Surgery in Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and was Dr. Rao Ivaturyâs first Surgical Critical Care.
Dr. Rodas went into private practice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for 6 years as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon, then moved back to his country, Ecuador for 5-years helping establish the first Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Program in his country. Dr. Rodas has served in the Panamerican Trauma Societyâs Board, participated as an active member of the society, has served as co-Chair and Chair of the Trauma Systems Committee, and Director of the Essential Trauma Course in Latin America. He has served in his non-profit foundation, CINTERANDES since he was a medical student as a founding member, trainee, junior surgeon, lead surgeon, board member and now President. The CINTERANDES Foundation provides access to safe surgery and anesthesia to remote and underserved areas in Ecuador by means of a Mobile Surgical Unit for 31 years.
In 2016 he was recruited by Virginia Commonwealth University and joined the Faculty as an Associate Professor of Surgery, where he co-founded and is the current Director of VCUâs Program for Global Surgery and VCUâs Acute Care and System Strengthening (ACCESS) Program in Low Resource Settings. He is also Director of VCUâs International Trauma System Development Program and has served and lead in many committees including the PTS Trauma Systems Committee, Educational Committee for the ACS/OGB, Co-Chair of the Humanitarian and Global Surgery Committee of the Virginia Chapter of the ACS and Co-Director of the ACS Global Health Competencies for Surgeons. He was recently elected as the Executive Secretary of the Panamerican Trauma Society in May 2025.
