Elliott Richard Haut, MD, PhD, FACS is Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service in the Department of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is a Professor of Surgery, Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine (ACCM), Emergency Medicine and Health Policy & Management at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Hautâs research focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and reporting of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). He was funded by a four-year K-award grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), has been the principal investigator of multiple large-scale VTE focused projects funded by AHRQ the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He was the co-PI and conference co-chair of the âConsensus Conference to Implement Optimal Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prophylaxis in Traumaâ funded by the National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI).
Dr. Haut completed his PhD in the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he completed a wide variety of coursework including epidemiology, biostatistics, comparative effectiveness research and clinical research design. His dissertation was titled âPreventable Harm from Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)âA New Metric for Quality of Care.â Dr. Haut is a core faculty member in the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Medicine. He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles, as well as dozens of invited editorials, books and chapters.
Dr. Haut has played numerous leadership roles in trauma surgery. He is past-President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and chaired the EAST Guidelines Committee. He is past-Chair of Maryland TraumaNet. He was lead author of a paper commissioned by the National Academies of Medicine titled âMilitary Trauma Careâs Learning Health System: The Importance of Data Driven Decision Makingâ which was used to support the Zero Preventable Death report. Dr. Haut was a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF) Trauma Outcomes Committee. Dr. Haut is on the Board of Directors of the Coalition for National Trauma Research (CNTR) and sits on the Maryland Statewide Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (SEMSAC). He is Editor in Chief of Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open (TSACO).
