President of KCS Participates in Key Discussions at the European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery in Aachen, Germany

Aachen, Germany â April 15, 2025: The European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery concluded today, bringing together leading experts to address critical issues in trauma care. Prof. Rifat Latifi, President of the Kosova College of Surgeons (KCS), presented on the session âImpact of trauma induced systemic inflammation on fracture and soft tissue healing after injury and infectionâ, with a lecture âFrailty, immunosenescence, and inflammaging in geriatric trauma patients:â emphasizing the role of systemic inflammation in trauma recovery, particularly among the geriatric population. The other panelists Elizabeth Rosado Balmayor from Aachen University, Rochelle Dicker from the University of California, San Francisco, Sharon Henry from Johns Hopkins University, and Vincent Dubuisson from Bordeaux University.
The session covered a variety of scientific topics, including the relationship between frailty and immunosenescence in elderly trauma patients, the potential of microRNA as biomarkers for fracture healing, and the need for equitable treatment across diverse demographics. Nutritional strategies to modulate inflammation and advances in surgical techniques and biomaterials were also key focus areas.
The congress delved into the mechanisms underlying inflammation and its impact on healing trajectories, specifically addressing the phenomenon of inflamm-aging, which poses significant challenges in managing trauma patients over the age of 65. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the potential for leveraging microRNAs not only as biomarkers for monitoring healing but also as therapeutic targets to modulate inflammatory responses post-injury. The integration of advanced biomaterials into clinical practice was also scrutinized, with a focus on their ability to enhance cellular responses and promote tissue regeneration in complex fractures and soft tissue injuries. As a result, the meeting underscored the pressing need for multidisciplinary collaboration to translate these scientific advancements into effective clinical protocols that improve outcomes for trauma patients.
In addition, he delivered a lecture on “Tips and Tricks in Unplanned Return to the Operating Room” specifically focusing on the challenges and strategies relevant to managing critically ill surgical patients.
