Prof. Dr. Adem Limani was born on February 13, 1953, in the village of NesalcĂ«, Bujanoc. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Prishtina, where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in 1978. After graduation, he pursued his Master’s studies at the University of Zagreb (1979â1982), followed by specialization in Otolaryngology â Head and Neck Surgery, also in Zagreb. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Prishtina in 1988, conducting research in Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Prishtina.
His academic career was developed within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prishtina, where he served as an Assistant (1979â1988), Assistant Professor (1988â1994), Associate Professor (1994â2000), and Full Professor (2000â2019). He was a key figure in the Faculty of Medicine, making an outstanding contribution to teaching, scientific research, and institutional development.
In addition to his academic work, Prof. Dr. Adem Limani was one of the initiators of the parallel healthcare education system in Kosova (1990). He served as the Minister of Health, Labor, and Social Policy (1991â1999). In this role, he became a pivotal figure in organizing the parallel healthcare and education system, enabling Kosovar doctors to pursue specialization and professional development through cooperation with health institutions in Albania. He was also engaged in reforming the structure and services of the ENT Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosova (UCCK).
Prof. Limani also held important positions within Kosova’s healthcare and academic institutions: he was Head of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Faculty of Medicine (1994â2012), Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2004), and Director of the ENT Clinic at UCCK (2007â2012). He also served as President of the Kosova Association of Otolaryngology â Head and Neck Surgery from 2003 to 2019.
His professional activity extended beyond national borders. He was an active member of several prestigious international organizations such as the Balkan Society of ENTâHead & Neck Surgery (2006â2019), the American Academy of Otolaryngology â Head & Neck Surgery (2007â2019), and the European Head & Neck Society (2009â2019), proudly representing Kosovar science internationally.
His scientific contributions include dozens of research papers published in both local and international journals, as well as two university textbooks that remain important references for medical students: âHuman Histologyâ (1999) and âOtorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeryâ (2003).
Prof. Dr. Adem Limani passed away on April 8, 2019, in Prishtina, leaving behind a rich professional, academic, and human legacy. He is remembered as one of the most distinguished figures in Kosovar medicine â a dedicated physician, exceptional educator, visionary leader, and tireless public health advocate.
