ADVANCED TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT (ATLS) COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN KOSOVA
The Kosova College of Surgeons, in partnership with the Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, North Dakota, USA, organized the course ‘Advanced Trauma Life in Kosovo’ for the first time in Kosova, on October 10-11 2023, at the building of the Emergency Medical Center, Pristina.
This course is the continuation of the initiatives of the KCS, bringing for the first time a world educational standard in Kosova. The ATLS course offers access to one of the most reputable training in the world, and meets the need for training in the fields of surgery, especially Trauma and Emergency Surgery.
The course was realized with the great support of Prof. Dr. Rifat Latifi and Prof. Dr. Mentor Ahmeti, who are trauma surgeons and practice their profession in the USA.
The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Kosova course is officially registered at Sanford Medical Center Fargo, North Dakota, USA, and is offered by the American College of Surgery.
Course Description
The Advanced Trauma Life SupportÂź (ATLSÂź) course presents a concise approach to the assessment and management of patients with multiple injuries.
The course presents physicians with knowledge and techniques that are comprehensive and easily adaptable to meet their needs.
The skills described in the manual represent the safe way to perform each technique, although the American College of Surgeons (ACS) recognizes that there are other acceptable approaches. However, the knowledge and skills learned in the course are easily adapted to all patient care settings.
The team of instructors of the Course was of international composition and mainly from the American College of Surgeons.
The number of participants in this course was 19, (specialists & specialists) who deal with the treatment of polytrauma patients (e.g. surgical disciplines, emergency medicine, anesthesiology).
The Kosova College of Surgeons has a mission of continuous education, perfecting modern operative techniques and approaches. ATLS training is planned to be held continuously throughout the years, based on the experiences of other countries and centers in the world, and which belongs to the standards of the American College of Surgeons.
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and its Committee on Trauma (COT) have developed the ATLS program for physicians. This program provides systematic and concise training in the early care of trauma patients.
The ATLS program provides participants with a safe and reliable method for the immediate treatment of injured patients and the basic knowledge needed for:
- Assessment of the patient’s condition quickly and accurately.
- Reanimation and stabilization of the patient according to priority.
- Determining whether the patient’s needs exceed the resources of an institution and/or the ability of a provider.
- Appropriate organization for interhospital transfer of the patient (who, what, when and how)
- Ensuring that optimal care is provided and that the level of care does not deteriorate at any point during the assessment, resuscitation or transfer process.
Objectives:
After completing the ATLS Course, the doctor are able to:
- Demonstrate the concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessments.
- Establish management priorities in a trauma situation.
- Initiate the primary and secondary management necessary for the emergency management of acute life- threatening conditions in a timely manner.
- In a specific simulation, demonstrates the skills that are often required during the initial assessment and treatment of patients with multiple injuries.
COURSE RESULTS
A total of 19 candidates registered for the course. Participants that completed the course achieved 100% passage rate of the practical part of the course.
