The Workshop Week of the Kosova College of Surgeons, May 22-26, 2023

The Kosova College of Surgeons organized the Workshop Week from May 22 to May 26, 2023. The week-long event focused on various surgical specialties, including Arthroscopy, Minimally Invasive Approaches in Cardiac Surgery, Laparoscopy in Abdominal Surgery, Gynecology, and Pediatric Surgery. With over 80 participants, the workshop provided an opportunity for surgeons to acquire specific skills tailored to their respective fields.

Unlike the previous year, this edition of the Workshop Week aimed to cater to a smaller group of participants from Orthopedics, Cardiac Surgery, Abdominal Surgery, Gynecology, and Pediatric Surgery. This adjustment ensured that each participant had sufficient time to learn and master the skills emphasized in the workshops.

The Workshop Week program was structured as follows:

The first two days, May 22 and 23, focused on Arthroscopy, led by renowned surgeon Prof. Dr. Alan Andonovski. The topics covered were “Pathology of the Meniscus” and “Pathology of the Cruciate Ligaments of the Knee.” In addition to the lectures, each of the 22 participating orthopedists had dedicated time to practice using a “phantom.” The workshop received support from the company “Agani.”

May 24 was dedicated to “Minimally Invasive Approaches in Cardiac Surgery.” Supported by AGS Corporation, this workshop featured the participation of 15 local and regional cardiac surgeons. The lecturers included Dr. Georges El Daccache, Selene Zanelli, Fabio Paterno, and Michel El Daccache. Alongside presentations on the latest techniques for minimally invasive heart interventions, the workshop introduced training on a natural heart model to simulate such procedures for the first time in the country.

The Workshop Week concluded with a two-day workshop on Laparoscopy in Abdominal Surgery, Gynecology, and Pediatric Surgery. On May 25, the workshop, supported by Solution D company, brought together over 50 local and regional surgeons. The lecturers for this session were Dr. Valon Zejnullahu, Dr. Remzi Gashi, Dr. Brikena Dacaj Elshani, Dr. Isber Ademaj, Dr. Afrim Muhaxheri, and Dr. Floren Kavaja. In addition to informative presentations and fruitful discussions, participants engaged in simulations at four exercise stations.

On the final day of the Workshop Week, May 26, live interventions were broadcasted to all Telemedicine centers. The procedures included a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy performed by Dr. Valon Zejnullahu and Dr. Vesel Skenderi at the Abdominal Clinic, UCCK – Laparoscopy Center, and an Ovarian cyst removal performed by Dr. Afrim Muhaxhiri at the “Fati im” Hospital.

Looking ahead, the Workshop Week of the Kosova College of Surgeons aims to focus on topics proposed by the participants in the coming year. This approach seeks to continually enhance the quality and effectiveness of the event, aligning with the needs and requirements of surgeons and residents.
