FAUSTO CATENA, M.D, PhD, FRCS

Fausto Catena.M.D, PhD, FRCS, is a Consultant General Surgeon with particular interest in colorectal surgery, upper GI surgery, proctology, oncologic surgery, hernia surgery, kidney transplantation, sarcoma and carcinomatosis (HIPEC), emergency- trauma surgery with mininvasive approach.

From 2000- 2011 he was a Consultant General Surgeon at the Dept. of General, Emergency and Transplant Surgery with at the St Orsola- Malpighi University Hospital Bologna Italy.  He has served in different roles, such as: Emergency Surgery Unit Coordinator, Transplant Renal Surgery Coordinator; Peritoneal malignancies (HIPEC procedures) and Sarcoma Surgery Coordinator.

From 2012 to 2020 he was the Chief of the Department of Emergency and General Surgery at the Parma University Hospital, Italy. From 2021 he is the Chief of the Department of General and Emergency Surgery at the Bufalini Hospital, Cesena, Italy.  

Prof Catena wrote more than 800 scientific papers, (more than 400 on pubmed, H index = 49), 40 book chapters and 5 Books (Emergency Surgery Manual, 2 volumes Trauma Book Springer, 2 volumes Acute Care Surgery Book – Springer, CT scan in emergency surgery manual – Springer).

Prof. Catena won 20 national and international scientific prizes.

He performed more than 4000 medium- high level surgical procedures. (ICD 9 CM codified)

Prof Catena is Editor in Chief of the World Journal of Emergency Surgery (IMPACT FACTOR 4.5), Former Editor of European Surgical Research, Editor of: Open Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Journal, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, Journal of Tumour, Global Journal of Surgery, African Journal of Emergency Medicine, Transplantation Technologies and Research, Journal of Solid Tumours, Journal of Acute Disease, Emergency Care Journal, Edorium Journal of Transplantation , BioMed Research International, Turkish Journal of Surgery, Journal of Infectious and Non Infectious Diseases, A Journal of Infectious Diseases, ECommunity Medicine, A Radiology, Hernia and Member of the Committee on Publication Ethics.

Dr Catena attended more than 300 national and international Congress and 30 Postgraduate Courses.

Dr Catena was invited speaker in about 250 national and international Congress and chairman in about 100 national and international Congress. He was also teacher in about 100 Postgraduate Courses and organized about 70 national – international Congresses and Postgraduate Courses.

Prof Catena was a Professor at the School of Specialization in General Surgery of Bologna University, Surgical Instructor for Residents in General Surgery, Professor in Emergency Surgery of the School of Specialization in Orthopaedics of Bologna University.

Dr Catena is member of about 20 National and International Scientific Societies, Past President of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons, General Secretary of the World Society of Emergency Surgery, General Secretary of the Italian Society of Surgical Physiopathology, Member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Society of Geriatric Surgery, past Member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Society of Digestive Pathology and Past President of ESYS- European College of Surgeons- Italian Chapter.

From 2012 he is Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons UK.

In 2013 and 2018 he had the italian national certification as full professor of general surgery.

His research activity is focused on emergency surgery (acute cholecystitis, adhesions, intra-abdominal infections, trauma), renal transplantation (graft preservation), oncologic surgery (GIST and carcinomatosis- HIPEC), colorectal surgery (elective and emergency colorectal cancer, diverticular disease) and abdominal wall surgery (biological prostheses).

Dr. Catena is world opinion leader in emergency surgery: he wrote all WSES guidelines- position papers in this scientific field.
