Dr. Besim Sllamniku was born in Gjilan on April 12, 1942. He attended primary and secondary school in Gjilan. He started the Faculty of Medicine in 1959 in Skopje, Macedonia, and graduated in 1964. In 1964 he started working as a doctor at the General Hospital, Pristina. From 1967 to 1970 he was a specialist doctor at the Clinic of ENT Surgery – head and neck, but he completed the last year of his specialization at the ENT Clinic – Salata, Zagreb – Croatia in 1971.
In 1974, he performed the first total laryngectomy in Kosova. In 1976 he spent 6 months at the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, Sweden where he completed part of his doctoral dissertation. In 1977 in Zagreb and Prishtina he completed his doctoral dissertation: “Problematics of therapeutic and prophylactic-elective radical dissection of the neck of laryngeal carcinoma”. In 1987-1988 he spent a year as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Washington, St. Louis MO, USA.
During that period he published more than 130 professional and scientific publications. His first book was Otorinolaringologija – and it was published by the Department of ENT Zagreb, Rijeka, Pristina. Among other things, he has authored many scientific articles in his field of interest. In 1972 he started working as an assistant, and from 1978 to 1983 he became an assistant professor, an associate professor, and then a full professor in ENT – head and neck surgery. From 1999-2015, he was the president of the Oncology Association of Kosova. He retired on April 12, 2007.
