Michael Sutherland, MD, MBA, FACS

Michael Sutherland, MD, MBA, FACS, is the Director of the Division of Member Services at the American College of Surgeons.  He is a Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University in Trauma and Emergency General Surgery.  Dr. Sutherland received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University and his MBA from The Ohio State University.  His surgical training was completed in the United States Air Force, and he is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Sutherland has served as a Trauma Medical Director, Trauma Systems Medical Director, and Associate Chief Medical Officer among his many roles in hospital leadership.  He is interested in the development of highly functioning trauma systems to bring optimal care to the largest number of citizens in the region.   He has worked in the full spectrum of trauma care from working as a prehospital medic, military surgeon, and surgeon in all four levels of trauma centers.

In his current role at the American College of Surgeons, he oversees all the ACS activities regarding international and domestic membership, worldwide chapter activities, the Board of Governors as well as programs such as Operation Giving Back, ACS Scholarship Programs, and the Military Health System Strategic Partnership with the ACS.

Dr. Sutherland is focused on demonstrating the value-added benefits of membership in the American College of Surgeons to Fellows worldwide.   He is dedicated to growing membership in the American College of Surgeons as an inclusive organization representing all specialties of surgery throughout the world.
