Omer Dzemali, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c.

Omer Dzemali completed his medical degree in 2000 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He subsequently completed his residency in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in 2006 at the Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt/Main. After completing his training, he received his venia legendi for cardiac surgery and has since served as a lecturer at the University of Frankfurt/Main.

In 2010, he relocated to Zurich, Switzerland, where he took on the role of Deputy Chief of Cardiac Surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive mitral valve repair and root-sparing aortic valve reconstruction.

Since 2014, he has held an extraordinary professorship at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje and Tetova, North Macedonia. In 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Doctor honoris causa) by the University of Tetova.

Currently, Prof. Dzemali is Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich and Head of the Cardiac Surgery Alliance Zurich, a strategic collaboration between the City Hospital Zurich, the University Hospital Zurich, and the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen. The alliance aims to deliver high-quality, cross-institutional cardiac surgical care and to foster national and international expertise through coordinated efforts.

His clinical and academic interests include minimally invasive cardiac surgery, particularly complex mitral valve repair and reconstructive aortic valve surgery, as well as off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) and complex cardiac surgical interventions.
