Özer Makay, MD, FEBS-ES

Dr. Özer Makay is a Professor of Surgery at Ege University, Medical School, Department of General Surgery. Dr. Makay was raised in the Netherlands and educated at EgeUniversity Medical School in general and endocrine surgery. He had postgraduate training in minimally invasive and endocrine surgery at the Free University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, University of Halle, Germany, University of Pisa, Italy, and Yonsei University, South Korea.

Dr. Makay became Turkey’s first ‘Board Qualified Fellow in Endocrine Surgery’. He lectures on a regular basis on national and international courses. His research work on various topics in endocrine surgery led to the publication of over 150 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters; over 70 presentations to national and international meetings. Nearly 20 of his researches received an award. According to the Web of Science Core Collection, his citation index is equal to more than 900, and his h-index is 16.

At the present time, he is an executive committee member of the Turkish Association of Endocrine Surgery, an examiner for the UEMS European Board in Endocrine Surgery, a member of the Research and Education Committee of the European Association of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES), member of International Advisory Board of Asian Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AsAES) and national collaborator and council member of the ‘Eurocrine’ project. He is currently being in a position of the Parathyroid Expert Group of European Society of Endocrinology (ESE). His center is appointed as a training center of the International Neural Monitoring Study Group (INMSG) for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery and of the ESES.      

He launched the robotic adrenalectomy program at his university, the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy & parathyroidectomy, and the transoral robotic thyroidectomy program of Turkey. He carried out Europe’s first transoral robotic thyroidectomy course in Belgium.
