Prof. Dr. Zenel Kelmendi was born in Presevo in 1937. He completed primary school in his hometown and secondary school in Pristina. In 1964, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. For one year he worked as a doctor in Gjilan, and in 1969 he came to Pristina when he started specializing in general and vascular surgery. He completed his specialization in Zagreb and then continued in Prague and Geneva. Prof. Kelmendi defended his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine in Pristina in 1980. In 1972, he was elected assistant of surgery, and then he reached the title of full professor of surgery. He has more than 50 publications in various scientific journals. From 1991 to 1996 he was the dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Prishtina, and from 1997 he was the rector of the University of Pristina “Hasan Prishtina” until his retirement in 2007.
